In this insights series from our founder and CEO Lori Teranishi, we explore seven critical trends that demand immediate attention from CEOs and their leadership teams. These trends, which we’ve observed in our work with clients across sectors and geographies, collectively signal an era of continuous disruption, emphasizing the urgent need for businesses to build resilience, agility and foresight to navigate the challenges ahead.

Critical Trend 7: Political and Social Disruption

President Trump’s immediate dismantling of the DEI infrastructure within the federal government, crackdown on illegal immigrants and trade war threats with other nations are polarizing policy shifts that will impact workplace dynamics, foreign labor markets and public sentiment.

With the COVID pandemic not yet a distant memory, and the risk of another pandemic always a reality, we face a world where vaccines may not be prioritized or even accessible during a future public health crisis. If such a crisis is mismanaged during the next four years, blame will be directed broadly — including at business leaders. Fairly or not, the public will expect them to have learned from the first pandemic and to do much more to keep their employees safe.

Foreign workers are crucial to the success of many U.S. industries, from farming to high tech. If their removal causes a labor gap, the competition for talent will become even more fierce. While pay is important, top prospects in many industries also care very much about corporate culture, environmentalism, diversity and other factors. Employers will have to do better in these areas to attract the best and the brightest.

The deep-seated divides in the U.S. will likely lead to ongoing polarization of the country, and overall fatigue and malaise on the part of employees, customers and investors. Corporate leaders, expected to speak out on issues, face a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” situation.

Organizational Response:

  • Prepare for potential regulatory changes and their business impacts
  • Develop strategies to navigate potential labor market disruptions
  • Foster a culture of respect and inclusion amidst political divisions
  • Stay neutral on divisive political issues while upholding corporate values

Conclusion

The future will be defined by continuous change and disruption. Leaders who embrace agility and resilience as strategic imperatives will be better equipped to drive sustainable success in this volatile environment.
