Easy New Year’s Resolutions for Communications Pros

Happy New Year! This year, we are taking our own advice and revisiting existing content with a fresh perspective. Consider these simple, effective and attainable New Year's resolutions for 2022. (Originally published 12/29/20.)

It’s probably safe to say that we’re all looking forward to the clock striking midnight on Dec. 31. Surviving 2020 has been no small feat. And this is no time for brutally challenging resolutions or deprivation of any kind (please, more chocolate, not less!) However, as we cross our fingers and hope for a dramatically better year, there is room to reflect on how we can hit the refresh button on our approach to communications. Here are some impactful but readily achievable New Year’s resolutions that communications professionals should consider.


Mine existing content for a second life

Be on the lookout to showcase existing/previous content or find ways to breathe new life into it. Take advantage of breaking news moments that shine a spotlight on a particular topic (e.g. diversity) by using the news hook as a jumping-off point to direct followers to an existing blog post, for example. Relevant content that stands the test of time may reach new eyeballs and lead to new followers the second time around.


Try an email brainstorm

Virtual brainstorms can be challenging. The audio may be glitchy or delayed, it’s hard to know who should talk when, and reading people’s expressions in real time can be next to impossible. But don’t let that stop you from a good ideation session. An email brainstorm, where one person kicks off a thread with an idea, gives fellow team members the freedom to circle back to the concept over the next few days. Committing thoughts to “paper” may even lead to an inspiration boost for some.


Launch a new spokesperson

There is likely untapped, willing talent within your or your client’s organization. Identify at least one individual who is willing to write, speak, or otherwise be a brand ambassador. Put some energy toward connecting them with journalists and opportunities and building up their social media profiles. Aside from additional placements, this could lead to discovering new areas of expertise to leverage going forward, as well as an increase in social engagement.


Support industry partners and organizations regularly

Set reminders for yourself to spend at least 30 minutes per week combing LinkedIn or your platform of choice to get a pulse on industry happenings. Amplify, share, like and comment on the good news of professional colleagues and other organizations. Reinforcing connections will be crucial this winter, and the goodwill that you put out can come back to you tenfold.


Practice gratitude

The stress and anxiety of 2020 will not magically disappear at the stroke of midnight, and you’ll have to continue communicating about the impact of the pandemic well into the new year. As you wrap up this challenging year, take a moment to reflect on the positives and embrace gratitude moving forward. Studies show that those who practice gratitude show improved health, wellness and productivity levels. Think about the formal and informal ways you can show appreciation to yourself and communicate how thankful you are to those around you in 2021.
